DC Comics reviews 11/6/19 – Justice League #35, Batman #82

Justice League #35

You don’t have to read anything besides Justice League to appreciate the scope of Year of the Villain. It’s been a mega event where the important events aren’t occurring in some standalone title, but one of DC’s main books.

Writers Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV are making it very hard on their successors on the title to top what they’ve been doing. With this issue they go even wider in their efforts to make this a DC-wide event.

I really appreciate how Snyder and Tynion have kept the Titans as a prominent team within Justice League despite the cancellation of their own title.
Justice/Doom now expands from a big event to an epic with links to Crisis on Infinite Earths as Perpetua begins wiping out worlds that favor justice over Doom.

That’s not a story that can be liberally borrowed from, but Snyder and Tynion pull it off.

Francis Manapul returns to handle the art after an extended absence. Similar to No Justice, Manapul gets a slew of characters to draw in his animated, lively style.

The issue ends somewhat abruptly as Snyder and Tynion seem to tease a last minute arrival, but opt to wrap it with a conversation between Luthor and Perpetua instead. Lex has been the eager lackey so I’m wondering if this is the point when he reverts to his normal nature.

Few books have been as consistently great as Justice League. This arc has delivered on all fronts as Snyder and Tynion keep finding ways to dazzle and surprise.
