DC Comics reviews 11/6/19 – Justice League #35, Batman #82

It’s almost impressive the cavalier disregard Brian Michael Bendis has for things that don’t fit his whims. The latest is the needless change of Tim Drake from Red Robin to Drake complete with a new uniform. With Young Justice hopping across the Multiverse there was little confusion with other Robins and this just feels like Bendis changing it up because he thought it was cool, regardless of what’s come before him.
That’s the overall feeling in reading this issue as the scattershot dialogue is just more of the same from Bendis. Every character is hyper verbal to the point that no one stands out and Jinny Box’s big trunk is a magical catch all deus ex machina for whatever the situation dictates.
Maybe the dialogue wouldn’t come across so grating if Bendis wasn’t writing so many titles at the moment where all the characters sound so irreverently similar. It always reads like Bendis is trying to be snappy and cute with the dialogue but too often it just comes off as obnoxious. Less is more with Bendis and it really feels like a case of if you’ve read two Bendis books a month you’ve read them all.
The art by John Timms and Nick Derrington is solid for the most part although there’s some panels where the characters’ faces and proportions look off.
And the big tease of Naomi joining the team? She literally appears in the final panel of the issue.
Young Justice started off promising but right now there’s nothing unique enough about it beyond Bendis’ random changes for the sake of changes.
