DC Comics reviews 12/11/19 – Detective Comics #1017, Superman #18

Far Sector #2

While not as eye opening and surprising as the first issue, Far Sector’s second installment shows this is clearly a series worth following. It’s not a Green Lantern book in the traditional sense, but Sojourner Mullein makes for an engaging and unique lead. If anything, Far Sector is a police detective series where the detective just so happens to have a power ring.

Sojourner’s narration helps the story from feeling too familiar and cliche. N.K. Jemisin doesn’t write Sojourner like the traditional hero and her thoughts are full of character. The main plot finds Sojourner trying to track down the main suspect in a murder case as the City Enduring hasn’t had a murder in centuries ever since emotions were restrained. It’s an interesting premise. Occasionally Jemisin gets too bogged down with world building and establishing new characters, which gets somewhat overwhelming at points.

One of the biggest draws with the series is the fantastic artwork of Jamal Campbell, who has definitely risen to the challenge of creating a unique world in the DC Universe. Each page looks more and more majestic. Campbell is in lockstep with Jemisin in terms of setting up the aesthetics of this sector and it’s led to a gorgeous backdrop for Sojourner’s adventures.

Far Sector shouldn’t stray far from your pull list as it’s delivering the kind of exciting original content we need more of in DC.
