DC Comics reviews 12/11/19 – Detective Comics #1017, Superman #18

Hawkman #19

hawkman #19

Hawkwoman has finally arrived and she’s here to fight Hawkman?

Carter Hall can’t enjoy this reunion as he’s fighting to regain control from the Sky Tyrant persona that’s taken over, presumably as a result of Year of the Villain.

Writer Robert Venditti had a potentially complicated situation with both Hawkwoman and Hawkgirl operating in the current timeline, but he made a smart decision that makes the most sense for his title.

Although conflicted emotionally, Hawkwoman is able to take down Sky Tyrant. Venditti reveals why this darker personality has taken charge while teasing another fun return for longtime Hawkman fans.

Pat Oliffe’s artwork was sharper this issue although there were still a few panels where his intent wasn’t clear. The improvements were noticed and appreciated.

I’m kind of ready for a real reunion of Hawkman and Hawkwoman now so hopefully Venditti’s instincts, which have always been solid so far on the book, have a fitting end point for the Sky Tyrant arc.
