DC Comics reviews 12/11/19 – Detective Comics #1017, Superman #18
Justice League Odyssey #16
Justice League Odyssey has a fun mix of characters, a large scale mission and an overwhelming agenda. The only thing the book is missing is consistency on the art front.
This arc is going to look odd in collected format as it’s rare when an artist sticks around for consecutive issues. Cliff Richards takes his turn on the merry-go-round this time. Richards’ style is straightforward and lacks some pizzazz, but tells a comprehensive and easy to follow story. Rain Beredo’s colors seemed more muted and washed out than normal.
Regardless the artist, writer Dan Abnett has dramatically improved the title. The character mix has definitely contributed to the fun as the group just feels so randomly thrown together in a way that works amazingly well.
Abnett focuses on new arrival Gamma Knife, who lacks a clever name, but adds another engaging personality in the mix as well as her neuro drone system that’s starting to gain sentience.
It’s been a fun few issues, but Abnett ends this with an expected confrontation that could prove the end of this new Justice League Odyssey squad.
