DC Comics reviews 2/19/20 – Justice League #41, Batman #89, DCeased Unkillable #1

The tricky thing about an event that ends with the heroes leaving Earth is it should limit ideas for a sequel/spin-off. Good thing for us, Tom Taylor is not the usual writer. In revisiting his DCeased universe, Taylor puts the spotlight on anti-heroes and the outright villains in Unkillables.

Deathstroke has an unusual reaction to the Anti-Life Equation and is quickly recruited by Vandal Savage to join his team of survivors — superheroes need not apply.

Meanwhile Jason Todd tracks down the surviving Bat Family members and makes way to get out of Gotham. Taylor again shows a masterful command of the voices of the DCU characters. It’s getting to the point where DC should pitch him on all of the big events as he’d ensure character consistency with their actions and dialogue.

This time he’s joined by Karl Mostert, whose work compares very favorably with Frank Quietly. Mostert does a terrific job showcasing the carnage of a world overrun by zombies. Rex Loki’s’ colors seem brighter than necessary for this dark of a story, but it makes for an interesting contrast.

Whenever Taylor tackles multiple DC characters in any format I’m game and Unkillables flies by as a new cast deals with the undead in what’s already shaping up to be another must-read event.
