The Justice League continue to find themselves hopelessly outmatched as they battle against The Eradicator’s army of Daxamites. It’s definitely a case where writer Robert Venditti has stacked the deck against the team although it almost feels somewhat like overkill. Each Daxamite is as strong as Superman and the team’s heavy hitters besides Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern can barely hold off one let alone The Eradicator.

The Flash is largely a non-factor and Batman is trying to recruit Madame Xanadu. That doesn’t make for a very eventful issue since the League is so overwhelmed. The League’s last iteration had a sizable roster, but giving the nature of the Justice League level threats, Venditti probably should add more than five members to the team.

Maybe the biggest downside to this onslaught attack is there’s not a lot of time for Venditti to develop the team dynamic. John Stewart is definitely being positioned as one of the leaders of the team, which is a fresh and interesting idea.

Aaron Lopresti arrives to handle the art this issue. Lopresti is one of the cleanest artists around these days with a style reminiscent of Jose Garcia-Lopez or George Perez. It’s hard to ever find fault with Lopresti’s work as he doesn’t take shortcuts on any pages.

Venditti has to set the stage, but with such a massively powered enemy force, this doesn’t seem like the kind of arc that should go for more than four, maybe five issues. It’s a solid opening arc for the new creative team although it’ll be interesting to see how Venditti figures out a way for the team to handle this threat in a credible manner.
