DC Comics reviews 2-26-20 – Action Comics #1020, Detective Comics #1020
Batman Superman #7
Moving beyond the Year of the Villain tie-ins is going to be good for Batman Superman. At least that’s the initial impression after reading this issue. writer Joshua Williamson sets up a clever conflict with General Zod and Ra’s al Ghul in an unexpected manner that makes a lot of sense given the characters involved.
This is a storyline that teases the unpredictable possibilities of this title complete with a slew of guest stars including Magog, The Prankster, Bizarro and Dr. Destiny. I don’t want to spoil the plot of this arc, but I love that Williamson took into account events that have recently played out in Superman for this one.
Nick Derrington steps in to handle the art for this arc. Derrington is one of the vintage style artists like Doc Shaner who brings a lively modern Silver Age take on the story. His panels are full of energy and his pages are captivating. Dave McCaig’s colors beautifully convey that bright and bold old school feel.
It’s always fun to see creative team’s tackle plots from other books and this one is a very strong one that should make for an excellent arc. Don’t miss this one.
