DC Comics reviews 2-26-20 – Action Comics #1020, Detective Comics #1020
Shazam #11
Multiple delays and and a packed house of numerous artists on each issue had dulled some of my excitement for Shazam, but writer Geoff Johns looks to have the title back on track as he starts to build to the biggest arc so far with the arrival of the Monster Society of Evil. Johns has set this up nicely and the payoff delivers with a great twist as The Wizard ends up fighting Billy Batson’s father, CC, causing a major division of loyalties.
Instead of a cavalcade of artists, Scott Kolins is the lone contributor this issue. That’s for the best as the rotation every five pages was getting old. And it’s not like Kolins is a lousy artist by any stretch as he brings a level of energy and movement that makes the issue come alive. The only slight complaint I had was certain panel arrangements made it difficult to distinguish between the powered up CC and Billy. Colorist Michael Atiyeh is the quiet MVP of the series thanks to a dazzling array of colors, which is especially important in a title with literally so much electricity flying around.
My only real concern is the involvement of one of Johns’ pet projects who could be a real wildcard in the story, but also seriously derail some of the hard earned momentum. For now, it’s looking like this will be a fantastic ride.
