DC Comics reviews 2-26-20 – Action Comics #1020, Detective Comics #1020
Suicide Squad #3
Enter Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo who have no problems rattling and upending expectations every issue to turn the concept of Suicide Squad on its head.
Taylor’s script have revitalized the original spirit of the book with shadowy government figures trying to weaponize supervillains for the sake of the country. Taylor raises the question how effective the Squad could be if it served the wrong master. Establishing a team with largely original characters returns that threat that anyone could get killed in any issue. Maybe not Deadshot or Harley Quinn, but everyone else is fair game. That brings a level of suspense that had been missing on the book for awhile.
Redondo’s art is so well suited for this version of the team. He’s established the new characters strongly with some basic visual cues like the short burst speedster Jog actually has a beer gut while Deadly Six has a smooth air to him. Adriano Lucas’ color work is exceptional with terrific shading and blends.
This version of Suicide Squad has been a radical departure from its predecessor, but it was a gamble well worth the risk. This has been one of the early new standouts in 2020 from DC and is definitely a book worth grabbing now.
