SH Figuarts Revenge of the Sith Obi-Wan Kenobi figure review
Obi-Wan Kenobi was easily one of the best aspects of the Prequel Trilogy. Ewan McGregor took on a role that really could have been thankless — who was going to forget Alex Guinness iconic take? —and make it his own. While we’re anxiously anticipating McGregor returning in the role in a Disney+ series, his last appearance in the role was in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, a film I’d argue is one of the best of the entire Star Wars saga.
I looked at SH Figuarts Revenge of the Sith Anakin Skywalker so let’s see how the Obi-Wan Kenobi figure turned out. Hopefully it won’t send me into isolation as a hermit.
Packaging: Bandai has not been interested in making these Figuarts packaging too exciting. It’s a basic setup with a nice portrait on the side and some action shots on the rear.
Likeness: Unlike a lot of the Figuarts figures, I actually got the Hasbro Star Wars Black Series version of ROTS Obi-Wan. He was one of the main reasons I started shifting my allegiances to Figuarts.
It’s all about the McGregor likeness. From the hair flow to the neatly crafted goatee, this is a terrific rendition of McGregor’s Obi-Wan. The articulation is a real selling point, but in this instance Figuarts blows away the Hasbro version.
There’s not as big an improvement on the outfit. Figuarts has a better layered look for the tunic, belt detail and flow of the pants with the high boots. All together it makes for a more streamlined, and less bulky take on the slender Obi-Wan.
A real question is how the figure matches up with the Attack of the Clones version. There’s subtle differences with the tunic and the bottom skirt rests a little longer. The boots are different and the ROTS figure is a little taller.
Scale: Obi-Wan is scaled properly to the Figuarts Mace Windu while being slightly taller than Anakin. That’s not right as Anakin should be a half head taller. This isn’t an issue with Obi-Wan of course is his scale is fine.
Paint: From reference pics, it looks like Figuarts got the exact right shading of Obi-Wan’s outfit from the light shade of tan with the tunic, the brown of the inner shirt, the darker brown of the belt and the glossy shade of the boots.
Obi-Wan also lacks the extreme gold shading of his hair, which is an improvement over some other figures including the Attack of the Clones version.
Articulation: This is the other category where Figuarts really shines compared to the Hasbro version. Figuarts’ Obi-Wan can hit so many iconic Jedi poses from the dual grip on the lightsaber and some signature poses from Revenge of the Sith.
Obi-Wan Kenobi has:
- neck
- shoulders
- elbows (double-jointed)
- wrist
- torso
- waist
- hips
- knees (double-jointed)
- ankles
- feet
Accessories: Obi-Wan comes with an alternate head sculpt. Figuarts went with a very specific look here where Obi-Wan tells Anakin at the end of their battle that he was the chosen one and his brother. For dioramas it’s going to look great. I might give that a shot when I catch up on my reviews.
He comes with an unlit lightsaber hilt as well as a lit one. Read the instructions for proper care in disassembling the saber to properly fit in the hand. The unlit saber clips onto the hole on the belt and stays on snugly.
Obi-Wan has three additional sets of hands: force gesturing, fists and a thinking hand and pointing fingers for his fight with General Grievous.
These swap out with no trouble, which had been a problem with these figures in the past.
As usual, I think for the price point we should be getting a Jedi robe as well. At least with Obi-Wan he’s not wearing his robes for most of his key moments in Sith.
Worth It? If you didn’t get Obi-Wan when he originally came out he’s gonna cost you. While the Attack of the Clones version is a very reasonable $69, the ROTS figure is $147 on Amazon. I don’t know if he’s worth that much more over the AOTC figure. Another retailer, Solaris Japan, has him for $136 and eBay has him for $130 and $190 in a bundle with Anakin.
Rating: 9 out of 10
This was a figure I was really anticipating and Figuarts didn’t disappoint. It’s a massive improvement over the Star Wars Black figure and matches up well in an ROTS display.
Where to Get it? Amazon has him in stock now so that’s the easiest and best bet at this point.
