DC Comics reviews 3/18/20 – Batman #91, DCeased Unkillables #2, Justice League #43

In a lot of interesting ways, Their Dark Designs feels like the spiritual successor to Hush. It features a Who’s Who of Batman villains, some tremendous action set pieces, a killer mystery and some of the best to the core portrayals of many of Batman’s large cast.

This issue, Batman tries to get a step ahead of The Designer while Joker explains his reasons for setting everything in motion on his end. Catwoman and Harley Quinn try to escape from The Designer’s clutches while Deathstroke considers his allegiances again.

Tynion’s take on Harley Quinn is incredibly refreshing. It doesn’t feel like Tynion’s Harley is trying to steal the show or undercut the drama. Instead, she’s the ideal comic foil wisecracking while all the chaos unfolds around her. Deathstroke also stands out here as Tynion solidifies his threat level to even Batman while making him more than just the cliche assassin.

Typically issues get rough with multiple artists, but the combination of Rafael Albuquerque, Jorge Jimenez and Carlo Pagulayan & Danny Miki make for a dynamic read with some incredible art.

This arc feels like it has the potential to go on and still be highly entertaining for another six issues. Tynion, Jimenez and company are cranking out a really memorable story here.

Considering Tynion has The Joker Wars lined up after this arc and it’s safe to say Batman is going to have an amazing 2020 and maybe one of the best years of this era.
