He-Man and the Masters of the Multiverse #5

He-Man and the Multiverse arrives at its penultimate issue and arguably right on time. The series has been an interesting glimpse of a multiverse take on He-Man,  but it’s played out like a string of losses for the heroes. At some point it feels like the heroes really can’t win this time.

Writer Tim Seeley takes the story to the barbaric He-Man from the mini-comics included with the early figures.  Seeley even adds the narration from those stories for a more authentic read. If you’ve read any issue so far you know how this plays out: Anti He-Man goes on a killing spree and eliminates another He-Man off the board.

Tom Derenick’s art is solid capturing all of the issue’s big moments easily. He’s also proven very adept at conveying the visual style of the various He-Man source materials.

This was probably the issue Seeley injected some sense of optimism that the tide was about to turn. Instead the big comeback is being saved for the final issue, and at that point it might be too late for a satisfying conclusion.
