Justice League Dark #21

It’s rare when Justice League Dark disappoints especially when it’s in the midst of an inspired arc with trouble on various fronts seemingly putting the team on the brink of oblivion. To be clear this issue doesn’t break that streak thanks to some intriguing twists and challenges.

Justice League Dark is one of the few books that succeeds one the strengths of constantly stacking the odds against the team.

This issue writers James Tynion IV and Ram V send Zatanna and Constantine to the Heart of the Rot while Wonder Woman, Detective Chimp and Animal Man try to settle an outbreak in Los Angeles.

As usual the stakes are high and failure to act quickly could be the difference between tragedy and living to fight another day.

Alvaro Martin Bueno returns to handle the artwork. While others can fill in admirably for him, Bueno is unequaled in showcasing the horrors the team consistently faces. June Chung’s color choices are excellent particularly with the shifts from flashbacks to dank caverns and the LA cityscape.

Ram V and Tynion aren’t letting off on the gas yet and this issue packs a lot in 22 pages. This was another strong issue with a tremendous hook to leave readers anxiously awaiting the next issue.
