DC Comics reviews 3/25/20 – Detective Comics #1021, Suicide Squad #4

It’s a Suicide Squad reunion as Captain Boomerang comes back, but it’s not a happy meeting as Lok wants Boomerang brought in. While that’s the big tease this issue, writer Tom Taylor actually spends more time detailing the formation of the anti-Suicide Squad that’s been forced to join the team.

One of Taylor’s biggest strengths is quickly establishing characters so they feel well developed in a relatively short time frame. Already four issues in and Taylor has made the new Suicide Squad a surprisingly strong mix of characters and personalities. If anything Deadshot and Harley Quinn seem out of place. Maybe forcing Boomerang to be part of the team will set up an old vs. new Squad dynamic that’s already faded away.

Daniel Sampere’s art with Adriano Lucas’ colors makes for an impactful visual combination. Sampere is such a smooth storyteller and brings a true cinematic flair to the story. His art is deceptively simple that I barely realized the issue was almost over as I got so caught up into watching everything unfold. Lucas is so effective at setting the mood with dark reds and bright whites as well as Wink’s teleporting powers.

Suicide Squad continues to be a major 2020 revelation from DC and seems set up to be one of the top team books of the year.
