Justice League #48

Justice League is in a weird holding pattern as it rotates creative teams in an doubt. These creative teams are also somewhat hamstrung by having to come up with stories of minor consequence since the team is in the midst of Dark Nights Death Metal, which could conceivably change everything anyway.

Writer Si Spurrier and artist Aaron Lopresti get first crack with an intergalactic take about the team helping exiled alien youth return to their home while inadvertently setting off a coup de etat. Spurrier’s take on the League seems off as Flash is the only character written consistently from previous issues. Granted, he can only do so much during his brief stint, but sending the team off on a space mission doesn’t make for the most riveting subplot.

Lopresti’s pencils are always remarkably clean. Even with a somewhat underwhelming plot, the art is solid enough that the issue isn’t a complete loss.

Justice League enjoyed a resurgence under Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV, but now it seems like the title is back to treading water and relying on its name value instead of highly engaging, episodic issues.
