Always a Bridesmaid star Javicia Leslie cast as the new Batwoman

There’s a new Batwoman in town. Javicia Leslie is replacing Ruby Rose as the lead on Batwoman.

Leslie, who stared in Always a Bridesmaid and was a regular on God Friended Me, will take The CW’s black superhero lead count to two. That’s a welcome step up from Black Lightning being the sole show among the network’s six superhero shows.

Leslie is not replacing Rose’s Kate Kane and will instead be a new character, Ryan Wilder.

Executive producer Caroline Dries has already stated that Kate Kane won’t be killed off.

“I’m inventing a whole new character who in her past was inspired by Batwoman, so she will take on the mantle and is completely maybe not the right person at the time to be doing it, so that’s what makes it fun,” Dries said.

According to the description, Ryan is “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and also could kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”

“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” Leslie said in a statement.

Interestingly, the show may have a predominately minority cast if Camrus Johnson, Meagan Tandy and Nicole Kang return for season 2.  This raises the obvious question that since this is the same one world now if Batwoman will ever cross paths with Black Lightning’s Thunder? And will Ryan be just as vital in the Arrowverse as Kate Kane? Previously the big crossover for the fall was slated to feature Superman and Batwoman so it will be curious to see if that’s still on the table.

I like this idea though and Leslie’s casting definitely has me more interested in checking out Season 2 of Batwoman. What do you think?
