DC Comics reviews 8/11/20 – Dark Knights Death Metal #3, Wonder Woman #760

Dark Knights Death Metal #3

dark knights death metal #3

I’m loving every insane bit of madness that is Dark Knights: Death Metal. This isn’t the kind of book that’s requiring readers to do some deep analysis and crank out reactionary thought pieces/videos afterward. It’s all about having an over the top blast and so far this series is delivering at every arena…er, issue.

Batman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn and Swamp Thing successfully make it to Apokolips in an effort to rescue the captive heroes, but first they’ve got to contend with its ruler to rescue Superman.

Among the highlights of this issue: Robin King crashes the JSA party and makes a terrifying introduction guaranteed to ensure he won’t get a return invite; Zombie Jonah Hex proves why it’s always a good thing to have a disposable zombie on the payroll and Batman gets a new idea for a bumper sticker. Oh and Robin Parademons.

Writer Scott Snyder starts revealing, better yet, teasing some cards this issue like the secret Batman and Superman are holding from Wonder Woman and the hidden plan of a longtime Perpetua ally ready to make their move. So far the story has mostly focused on showcasing the horrible state of the DC Universe, but Snyder offers some glimpses of a possibility for hope if that’s not just The Batman Who Laughs’ latest form.

Greg Capullo always seems to rise to the challenge of whatever Snyder conjures up and he draws some amazing scenes right from the opening page to the end that seem like they’re going to be hard to top. Inker Jonathan Glapion does his expected high end embellishing and FCO Plascencia’s colors are striking.

We’re more or less at the halfway point of this seven issue mini-series so Snyder and Capullo have plenty of story left to tell, but it’s nice to see the plan go a bit awry as new players emerge and everything is up for grabs.
