DC Comics reviews 10/20/20 – Batman #101, The Robin King #1

Justice League #55

Justice-League-#55-1

The sign of a fun event spin-off is that it always seems to end way too quickly. So far each issue of the Death Metal tie-in feels like it’s 6 pages instead of the normal count.

In large part this is due to writer Joshua Williamson understanding how to set up an engaging quest with a motley crew of characters. This makeshift Justice League has an important task but they must overcome their understandable distrust of Lex Luthor.

Lex is always shifty so being cautious around him makes sense, but Nightwing and company will have to trust him somewhat if they are to defeat the island of Starro and his mind manipulations.

Meanwhile, Martian Manhunter has to stave off the probing of the Dark Night Manhunter.

Robson Rocha’s art remains dynamic and he seems to be tapping into a greater level of detail in his pages. There’s a number of spreads in this issue, yet it doesn’t feel like a way to stretch out the story and more deliver the magnitude these moments demand.

The odds look stacked against the team with this issue’s cliffhanger although there’s every reason to be excited about what direction Williamson and Rocha will take this tie-in next.
