DC Comics reviews 10/20/20 – Batman #101, The Robin King #1
Nightwing #75
Nightwing’s 75th issue is an odd one. The story is set before Batman #100, but thanks to The Joker War prelude that took place in Nightwing leading to that milestone issue it’s more difficult than necessary trying to place exactly when this story occurs.
That would be more understandable if writer Dan Jurgens took some time off and another writer handled this story, but Jurgens hasn’t skipped an issue including handing the Dick Grayson memory restoration baton over to the main Batman title.
Then other segments of the story play out as if The Joker War is over and Dick Grayson didn’t already resume his Nightwing identity.
It’s a very confusing continuity situation. Eventually, Jurgens catches the story up and begins addressing subplots like Dick’s feelings for Bea and the four Nightwings. I’d gotten used to them as supporting characters so I hope Jurgens isn’t writing them out for good.
A smoother component of the issue is the art. Travis Moore and Ronan Cliquet team up to split the art duties. Moore’s style is such a strong fit for Nightwing and it’s always a treat seeing his lifelike portraits of Dick Grayson’s life. Cliquet remains consistent with his solid artwork. I still don’t think Nightwing is the best title for his style, but his storytelling strengths prevent his pages from ever looking awkward.
Jurgens sets up the smart rematch with the return of the villain who put Dick on the shelf. With his memories a little wonky, does Nightwing have what it takes to stop the adversary that almost killed him?
While clunky in the setup, this issue eventually settles on solid footing as Jurgens establishes the new status quo for Nightwing.
