Black Lightning’s next season will be its last. The CW revealed the series will wrap today according to TVLine.
“When we first started the Black Lighting journey, I knew that Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful Black Women would be a unique addition to the super hero genre,” executive producer Salim Akil said in a statement. “The love that Blerds and all comic book fans around the globe have shown this series over the past three seasons proved what we imagined, Black People Want To See Themselves in all their complexities.”
The CW is working on a Black Lightning spinoff on supporting character Painkiller, but we saw how well setting up a spinoff within an existing show with Arrow’s final season.

What’s weird is the CWVerse set up a pretty intriguing Justice League with Superman, Supergirl, The Flash, White Canary, Martian Manhunter, Black Lightning and Batwoman. With Supergirl and Black Lightning both ending and a new Batwoman cast to replace Ruby Rose If the plans are to set up a Justice League show, it’s more of a possibility with less need to coordinate around the various show schedules.
“While Season Four may be the end of one journey, I’m extremely excited to usher in a new chapter and continued collaboration with The CW as we tell the story of Painkiller,” Akil added in the statement.
I’m wondering if The CW just wants a whole new slate of superhero shows. Superman & Lois, along with The Flash, seem like strong anchors. Legends of Tomorrow is that weird outlier that has a devoted fanbase. Batwoman is basically a new series. Stargirl is a better replacement for Supergirl and this in-development Wonder Woman series seems to set the deck for a very different CWVerse by this time next year.
