DC Comics reviews 12/9/20 – The Flash #767, Endless Winter tie-ins
Endless Winter Superman Special #1
This is the third chapter of the mini-event and it’s starting to have some degree of familiarity — the spotlight is on a different Justice Leaguer responding to the Endless Winter with some more back story to the origin of the Frost King. It’s not a bad formula per se and writers Andy Lanning and Ron Marz have found the special touches to progress the story without the sense that nothing major is happening.
For this installment, Superman takes the focus as Lois Lane “narrates” an Op-Ed piece for the Daily Planet about the Endless Winter as he battles ice monsters, checks in on his parents and catches up with Krypto.
It was nice seeing Phil Hester back drawing Superman as it’s been years. Hester has a timeless unique style that remains consistent no matter how much time passes. The art is a highlight this issue as Hester’s style is a sharp contrast to the current art teams on the Superman titles. Marco Santucci provides the flashback sequences.
Endless Winter Superman Special didn’t have a lot of surprises, but the format of the story is making for a decent serial storyline for readers who want a weekly arc featuring the Justice League.
