Future State Shazam #1

future state shazam #1

Shazam has been a character that’s recently had so many starts and stops he should be a member of the Legion of Super Heroes.

In this Future State story, writer Tim Sheridan takes a very different approach with the character that’s darker than expected yet avoids coming off too gratuitous. The specific timeframe of this future is unclear, but Shazam is estranged from the rest of the Marvel family and a moody, almost reluctant member of his squad of the Justice League. Sheridan introduces the idea that this future has several versions of the League. This one features an interesting lineup with Vixen, The Question, Bunker, Power Girl and Martian Manhunter. Sheridan quietly uses Shazam for the backdrop for his League, which has a nice blend of characters and personalities that would make for a fun League in the regular DC timeline.

Gradually, Sheridan reveals that not all is right with Billy Batson, who recalls an earlier encounter with Neron, a villain that seemed poised to become another Shazam archenemy.

Eduardo Panscia’s art is superb with powerful imagery throughout along with some tone-perfect closeups and perspectives. Marcelo Maiolo’s colors and Julio Ferreria’s inks make for a striking complement to Panscia’s art.

Sheridan really sold me on his vision of the Justice League and I’d love to see this team revisited. The effective cliffhanger ensured that my interest is piqued for this very unique take on Billy Batson/Shazam.
