MAFEX Hush Superman figure review

The  Hush Superman makes a more than convincing case that I should just go all in for whatever DC figures MAFEX wants to release. Cape issues aside, I was very impressed with the Hush Batman so I’ve been eagerly anticipating Superman’s arrival. Let’s see if this version of the Man of Steel makes me want to loudly tell everyone all about it.

Packaging:  MAFEX wisely keeps the consistency of the Hush theme with the blue grey color scheme similar to the trade dress. The window nicely showcases the figure and all the accessories.

On the back there’s many more portraits of the figure and the various accessories. A bio would be nice, but the figure pictures is a decent alternative.

Likeness:  DC Direct did a pretty decent Hush Superman. The trick with nailing the look is how much the figure evokes Jim Lee’s art. That was the case with the Batman figure. I don’t think this is as an exact a representation of Lee’s style, but it makes for a very exceptional early 2000s Superman.

His physique is solid without venturing into Ed McGuiness proportions. Likewise, the headsculpt is very good if not 100% Lee. This headsculpt skews just a bit down like humanity has disappointed him once again or Krypto made a mess in the Fortress of Solitude again.

Speaking of… Krypto would have been a fun accessory that was relevant to the story.

Paint:  Most of the paintwork is clean. I think his blue is just a tad lighter than how it actually appeared in Hush however.

It seems the flesh portions are going to be high risk areas for paint flaking and easy damage. The thumb of the left fist already had a scrape in package and the nose had a very minor smudge.

The yellow in the belt also carried down slightly into the tights. These would barely be worth mentioning with a $20 Marvel Legends figure, but it hits a bit different when a figure is getting into the $100 price range.

Scale:  At 6” Hush Superman is slightly taller than Batman, but the beauty and fun is his size allows for some favorable matches up fairly well with most other figures including the DC Multiverse line and certain DC Classics.

Given the rate of MAFEX releases that’s a good thing since it will probably be 2023 before we get a Lex Luthor that works with him.

His head is a tad undersized compared to Batman though.

Articulation: Superman has excellent articulation making for the best six-inch scaled version in this category.

I had a lot of fun trying out different poses and then being pleasantly surprised that he could hit them.

Hush Superman has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • elbow
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • hip
  • knee (double-jointed)
  • ankle

Cape: I’m making this its own category. Once again it has the wiring to help with dynamic posing. I wish the Hush Batman had a swappable less wide cape.

Superman’s is the ideal length and doesn’t overwhelm him. I didn’t get too bold with the cape posing yet, but this turned out very nice.

Accessories:  Superman doesn’t have the obvious array of accessories like Batman, but MAFEX made sure he wasn’t lacking on this front.

He’s got an alternate sorta angry headsculpt with gritted teeth and red eyes as if he’s about to unleash his heat vision. I like this focused/angry/determined sculpt precisely since it covers so many emotions.

I do wish there were more of a happier Superman head sculpt included as well since both options are a little bit more sterner than I typically think of with Superman.

There’s four different sets of hands — flight, grasping, wide open hands and partially open hands. These swap without any trouble. Take note Storm Collectibles and Hot Toys.

He also his the tainted ivy that Poison Ivy used to control him. There’s three segments — one that wraps around his neck and two that go around his forearms. They’re well detailed and aren’t just green blobs pieces.

The final component for these is the Batman fist with his Kryptonite ring that he used to help balance the odds slightly. I’m a big fan when I can get accessories for other figures that weren’t essential with the initial release and help pad out a figure who was lacking on their own.

Worth it?  Hush Superman clocked in at $95 on Sideshow Collectibles. If you pre-ordered maybe you could have gotten him for $10-$15 cheaper. This isn’t a cheap line by any means and he’s definitely not the price of a near complete wave of Marvel Legends. On the other hand you’re not going to get a better articulated Superman at this scale so….

Ideally the price point for this line would be about $50.

Rating:  9.7 out of 10

One more happier portrait would have earned Superman the full score, but this is an exceptional score. Even with the price tag if MAFEX would crank up its output of classic style figures they would be my go-to source for DC figures now.

Where to get it?  Amazon has him for a ridiculous price already. Sideshow also has Superman him on the waitlist and Hush is one of the few that is still available for pre-order with free shipping, which is the best deal I can find.
