Suicide Squad #1

A new era of the Suicide Squad might have kicked off, but Amanda Waller is still playing by her own rules.

Writer Robbie Thompson introduces the all-new, all-expendable Squad headed by Peacemaker, Bolt, Shrike and Film Freak. For their first mission, Waller sends them off to Arkham Asylum to add a new member to their ranks, but is securing Talon’s services worth losing most of the team? And what does Rick Flag think about this revival?

Thompson doesn’t break new ground here going with the Suicide Squad staple of the team being comprised of cannon fodder characters and a few C- to B-list characters capable of safely completing their missions.

Since he’s the only one starring in an HBO Max spinoff starring John Cena, Peacemaker has good odds on surviving for awhile and Thompson teases adding some heavyweights capable of surviving standard Squad missions.

Eduardo Pansica’s solid art helps convey that sense of hopelessness and overwhelming odds. Pansica was a great choice to handle the art on the title as he’s got a highly detailed style without many shortcuts.

Fighting through Arkham isn’t a novel concept, but Thompson tries to make it make engaging with the setup on the final few pages and a different approach on building a better Suicide Squad.
