Swamp Thing #1

Swamp Thing has been a character that never really manages to have much staying power despite DC’s continued efforts to find a take that sticks.

It’s still way too early to tell, but Writer Ram V and artist Mike Perkins get off to a captivating start with the launch of their Infinite Frontier take on Swamp Thing.

This is an easy jump on point for new readers as this is a fresh look at the character with a new host free of any continuity baggage.

Ram V introduces us to Levi Kamei, a man having some disturbing visions of a creature in the green. While Levi is making sense of these visions, another more malevolent threat is emerging in The Sonoran Desert.

Perkins doesn’t have a pretty or clean style. It’s kinda gritty and harsh, which isn’t a great fit for superhero characters. That makes him an ideal artist for a title like Swamp Thing, where Perkins can play to his moody, atmospheric strengths.

The whole vibe of this incarnation of Swamp Thing makes this fresh glimpse of a familiar character very compelling. This feels like the right collaboration creative team that’s capable of establishing a memorable Rubin the character given their Future State tease and this kickoff issue.

It’s not going to be the flashiest or sexiest title, but Swamp Thing shows a ton of potential to be a breakout book in the Infinite Future slate.
