DC Comics reviews 4/13/21 – Batman The Detective #1, Superman #30

Batman: The Detective #1

While DC continuity might be tricky to decipher these days the pairing of writer Tom Taylor and artist Andy Kubert is more than enough to pique my interest for this mini-series.

For continuity nuts like myself, this story appears to be based after City of Bane and before Joker War as Alfred is dead, but Bruce Wayne still has access to his fortune and wonderful toys.

A tragedy in the United Kingdom prompts Batman to head out of his normal jurisdiction to determine the link of his role in the incident. Taylor isn’t doing lip service with the title and sets up a worthwhile mystery to Batman to unravel.

Given the setting, it was nice to see Taylor incorporate newer additions to the Batman mythos.

Kubert previously worked on Batman for one of the more pivotal modern changes in the character’s history with the introduction of Damian Wayne. It’s nice to see Kubert return to Batman while giving him a slightly tweaked costume for his UK adventure. Kubert’s skills remain sharp and the sense of energy and movement he provides on his pages offer a strong cinematic feel. Brad Anderson’s colors provide a rich, intense complement to Kubert’s pencils.

The Detective gets off to a good start as Taylor, Kubert and Anderson manage the challenging task of having yet another new Batman title stand out among the flood of Dark Knight books on the stands.
