Power Rangers Lightning Collection Mighty Morphin Power Rangers King Sphinx figure review
This I’ll just get the main Power Rangers and call my Lightning Collection a day approach hasn’t worked. Hasbro is all about cranking out fun figures like King Sphinx and I’m happily picking them all up. But honestly, how could you ignore a figure this ridiculously awesome?
Like a lot of these characters at this point, I barely remember King Sphinx but he just looks so cool I didn’t mind doing a little YouTube and Google research.
Packaging: This is the same basic setup as the standard figures, but the deluxe presentation looks a little better with the wide window and larger character portrait.
The back looks especially barren though and I remain surprised Hasbro hasn’t decided on any kind of bio or brief write-up on these guys.
Likeness: Man. I’ve been impressed with the Lightning Collection line in general, but King Sphinx might be the new pinnacle of the series. He just looks massive and the unique sculpted elements are commendable.
I love the head sculpt, which makes him look especially sinister and evil. That gives him a lot of personality and fits the grinning visual of the source material well. His armored shoulder pads, headpiece and coiled beard have a terrific amount of detail and texturing.
There’s even some cool sculpted glyphs along the shoulder pads, his chest and skirt. And the third eye on his abs gives him such a unique look. I also like the open clawed hands, which will make it easier for him to throttle the Rangers.
Then of course there’s the massive wings. I don’t remember him flying on the show, but they definitely add another hieroglyphic element to his overall design.
Scale: On the show, King Sphinx was maybe a little taller than the Red Ranger. The LC figure is noticeably taller maybe as a nod to when he gets enlarged to giant size by Rita?
I don’t mind bad guys being taller especially since he looks more formidable fighting against the Rangers on his own. Of course now he’s towering over Goldar, who should be the same height.

Paint: King Sphinx features more paint applications than the standard Power Rangers Lightning Collection figure. The one area he’s lacking is the mouth area, which should be black instead of off grey.
Those oh-so-tiny teeth make me a little leery of trying it myself, but I’ll just have to be patient.
I haven’t had any issues with the paintjobs on many LC figure so I wasn’t expecting any paint flaws and that’s the case with him as well.
There’s some random light green wash along the body. It’s too much to write it off like a mistake and seemed intentional to break up the off white.
Articulation: Even with his larger scale, King Sphinx still retains the level of poseability and articulation that I’m starting to become accustomed to with this line. Hasbro has set up a solid base with these figures and despite his size, he doesn’t topple over as a result of his extra bulk.
King Sphinx has:
- neck
- shoulders
- elbow (double-jointed)
- wrist
- wrist hinge
- torso
- waist
- tail
- hip
- knee (double-jointed)
- ankle
Accessories: King Sphinx comes with his staff. It also maintains that Egyptian theme. As usual with the line, he’s also got an energy effect. This one is a spiraling red piece that wraps around the staff nicely.
Finally, he has alternate gripping hands to hold his staff in either hand.
Worth it? These deluxe figures typically are available for $30, but GameStop had him for $23 so along with the $5 coupon, I got him for cheaper than a regular figure. That’s not a bad deal.
Rating: 9.7 out of 10
The only issue here is the lack of the paint in the mouth. I don’t care about the extra height and the sculpt work makes up for any scale “discrepancy.”
Where to get it? I’ve seen King Sphinx at Target and GameStop, but he’s also available on Amazon for $22 and Entertainment Earth.
