WWE Elite #77 Ravishing Rick Rude figure review

‘Ravishing’ Rick Rude was a great heel. There was nothing remotely redeeming about him to make him sympathetic and he was such a jerk you couldn’t wait to see him get punked out by guys like Rowdy Roddy Piper, Ultimate Warrior and Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts.

Mattel has released a decent amount of Rude figures over the years, but this time we get what’s probably the quintessential version of the Ravishing One. Keep the noise down while I go through this review.

Packaging:  I Mattel does a good job of mixing up the packaging according to big WWE events. This one is based around SummerSlam and has an orange and blue color scheme.

Likeness: Mattel has given us a nice variety of versions of Rude. This time Mattel went with the poofy hairstyle from the bulk of his WWF run.

Thankfully, Mattel didn’t do the kissy face expression — which would be fine as the alternate head sculpt but not the main one — and gave him a serious expression.

Mattel cracked the code for the right body parts for Rude so his figures have a defined torso and lanky legs. It’s another strong likeness for him.

MORE:

Scale:  Rude was 6’3” the same height as his Heenan Family pal Mr. Perfect and taller than the 6’2” Ultimate Warrior and 6’ Rowdy Roddy Piper.

Paint:  Mattel is bringing back the chase concept in all of its lines. This is the standard Rude figure. The variant is largely all yellow with an airbrushed Intercontinental title and pink boots.

I love how intricate the paintwork is on the standard figure with one exception. Rude had a slew of great ring attire to choose from, but Mattel tends to link his tights to his feuds with the Ultimate Warrior.

This outfit is based on his SummerSlam 1989 match. Mattel did an outstanding job of translating this to figure for on both front and back.

This would be one of the showcase figures for paint work in this scale for 2020 if it weren’t for the unfortunate staining on Rude’s arms and chest from the robe. Mattel has had staining on figures over time, but this is the first where it’s widespread even before the figure is opened. Mattel has done a commendable job addressing this with packing subsequent Rude figures coming with the robe packed separately from the figure.

Articulation:  This body allows for easy posing for all of Rude’s signature move set including a largely decent Rude Awakening thanks to the various hand options. His longer mane restricts some of his posing as you might expect.

I wish I could get a convincing Camel Clutch, but his chest and leg range isn’t great for that kind of move.

‘Ravishing’ Rick Rude has:

  • neck
  • bicep
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • elbows
  • wrists
  • wrist hinge
  • waist
  • hips
  • thighs
  • knees (double-jointed)
  • ankles

I’m very glad we have a late 80s Rowdy Piper BTW.

Accessories: The big accessory here is the aforementioned staining black ring robe. It’s the same as his Legends figure, but since we have the red one as well, it’s fine. Despite the issues with the robe staining it does look nice.

Hopefully we’ll get an actual WCW Dangerous Alliance version with a blue robe and the US title.

Rude also has two other sets of hands with a pair of gripping hands and fists.

Worth it?  The Ravishing One is available for $20. That’s the sweet spot for this line, which might be why one of the reasons earlier Ultimate Edition figures seemed to be a tougher sell.

Rating: 9 out of 10

This is the classic WWF version of Rick Rude. I wish Mattel would make more Ultimate Warrior-free designs for Rude, but this is another solid figure that is a fluke staining issue aside from being really good.

Where to get it?  Target seems to be the go-to spot for newer WWE figures as Amazon rarely has them at retail price. Entertainment Earth still has Rude up for pre-order at regular price.
