I’ve been a big fan of Batwing and consider him a sadly underutilized player in the DC Universe/Bat Family. Today proved a big day for Luke Fox.
Not only was he featured in the latest edition of Batman Urban Legends, but we got our first look at Luke’s Batwing costume for Batwoman. I couldn’t deal with the Alice focus of Batwoman for an episode longer, but with Batwing making his debut, I might be up for giving it one more shot.
In an interview, Johnson said this was the reason he signed up for Batwoman.
“Honestly, it’s hard to explain how much it means to me to wear the Batwing suit and officially play my first superhero,” Johnson said. “The main reason I wanted to be in Batwoman was for this opportunity — to give kids like me another Black hero to look up to and relate to. It’s hard not to smile when I catch myself in the mirror with the bat symbol on my chest, and I’ll keep smiling through every fight scene, every awesome stunt, and every Gotham night where Batwing is finally in the field!”

The costume looks pretty good although I’m surprised at the lack of…wings on Batwing’s outfit. Maybe they’ll be a post production edit?
Batwoman has taken the torch from shows like Supergirl and Black Lightning in terms of celebrating diversity. The fact that it features two black leads as superheroes is pretty amazing.
While I had problems with Batwoman it definitely didn’t involve new lead Javicia Leslie and Johnson’s Fox. Have I talked myself into giving this show another shot?
