DC Comics reviews 6/8/21 – Detective Comics #1037, Rorschach #9
Justice League Last Ride #2
Last Ride #2 plays out like yet another gloomy world is ending story from DC. At some point DC writers are going to need to do something truly special (see Tom Taylor and Trevor Hairsine’s DCeased) to make these kinds of bleak stories stand out.
Writer Chip Zdarsky is game, but ultimately this issue focuses on the emotionally beaten down as they prepare to transport Lobo off Earth. Through flashbacks, we see how Darkseid conquered Oa and invaded Earth with clever implementations of the Boom Tube. But this is a story following DCeased’s exemplary use of Darkseid and the Fourth World characters, which suggests some other DC villains need to get raised to higher tier/world dominating threat levels.
The art from Miguel Mendonca was solid throughout with nice layouts and clean action sequences. Enrica Eren Angiolini’s color work is exquisite and fits Mendoca’s style incredibly well.
Last Ride has some intriguing elements, but a bickering Superman and Batman and the death of some Leaguers doesn’t feel like a fresh enough story at this point.
