DC Comics reviews 6/8/21 – Detective Comics #1037, Rorschach #9
Rorschach #9
In writing Rorschach, Tom King has been like a Nicolas Cage or Star Trek movie. If he just delivered a good/strong issue, the quality of the next one is gonna be a little shaky.
True to form this issue, following an exceptional issue 8, there’s not a lot to get excited about with this one.
The detective is still tracing the steps of Myerson and his accomplice at the ranch. King has always preferred the super slow burn with his stories. This installment felt like there was about half an issue worth of useful content and the rest was filler.
Regardless of plot progression, artist Jorge Fornes has stayed dialed in with his cinematic presentation. That is a tremendous asset this issue as the script calls for the detective standing in the same settings as Myerson while he plots his assassination attempt. Dave Stewart’s strong color work also helps steer the mood and foreboding tone.
If King is making a stew, this issue is just the parsley — it’s nice to look at, but isn’t meaty enough to make it worthwhile.
