DC Comics reviews 6/8/21 – Detective Comics #1037, Rorschach #9
Wonder Woman #773
Wonder Woman’s trek through the Nordic era fighting alongside Thor, Odin and the Valkyries had been pretty fun. It’s too bad it wraps with a silly lunkhead men vs. amazing women.
At one point Thor responds to being slapped punched by Wonder Woman “a pretty good punch for a girl.” Wonder Woman humiliating a blowhard Thor feels like seriously low hanging fruit.
Writers Michael W. Conrad and Becky Cloonan seem to get a kick out of knocking this Thor down a peg or three as Wonder Woman takes down the real troublemaker. That fight plays out in very anticlimactic fashion making it seem like something that could have been done a few issues ago.
Travis Moore’s gorgeous artwork doesn’t disappoint and has been a consistent positive for this arc. Conrad and Cloonan played to Moore’s strengths and limited the action allowing him to get more creative with his layouts for extended conversations.
The ending of this arc felt abrupt and not as satisfying given the potential-filled set up. Diana journeys to another era — one that seems poised to offer a bit more familiarity and personal stakes.
Underwhelming conclusion for this arc aside, I’m still intrigued at Wonder Woman’s travels through time.
