AEW Unrivaled Sammy Guevara figure review

Sammy Guevara hit AEW looking like he was going to be a breakout star from the first episode of AEW Dynamite. As a founding member of The Inner Circle, he’s been a major player in AEW so you could argue he’s been overdue to be included in Wicked Cool Toys/Jazwares’ AEW Unrivaled line, but making the cut in Wave 4 isn’t too terrible.

Let’s see if one half of Le Sex Gods is ready for his close up.

Packaging:  This is always going to be the category that Jazwares/WCT comes up lacking for me. Not because the front is bad — the gold accents actually looks great against the black and the foil makes for an eye catching design on the stands.

The side portrait remains too small and the back offers little worthwhile insight since there’s no bio. This reveals Sammy’s attire was from the first episode of Dynamite so you can mostly re-enact the formation of The Inner Circle.

Likeness: This is definitely a case where I wish WCT went with multiple head sculpts over some other accessories. The likeness is dead on and definitely something Sammy does a ton.

It’s not even a case where he so rarely does it that it’s puzzling why they went with the X-Pac tongue out expression. But again, the reference photo shows the base default look of the character and that’s what at least the initial figure should resemble.

This head sculpt significantly restricts sensible posing options especially when Sammy is on the receiving end of a beat down.

Beyond that, his sculpt reflects his smaller frame relatively well. He probably still could be a bit slimmer. I was concerned this would be an issue with Jazwares, but it hasn’t been a problem at all.

Scale:  Sammy is 5’10” so he’s one of the taller shorter members of the roster. He should be looking up at the 6’1″ Cody Rhodes, 6’4″ Jon Moxley, 5’11” MJF. while looking down at the 5’8″ Darby Allin. Jazwares is still a little too basic on the scaling, but Sammy’s hair is giving him sneaky height and he seems scaled properly to Cody and Jericho.

MORE:

Paint: After some more complicated figures, Sammy is a very simple one for WCT with easy lining along his boots. The gold lining on the top is sloppy though.

Thankfully that slop is the only paint flaws as the tight design is solid and the work on Sammy’s face from the teeth, mouth, tongue and hair fade is exceptional.

Articulation:  I’ve gotten comfortable with the articulation of the Unrivaled line and it’s been impressive to see WCT incorporate such solid articulation into a mass market wrestling line for this price point.

Sammy is a super athlete so he definitely needed to be flexible enough to pull off his high-flying arsenal.

Sammy Guevara has:

  • neck
  • bicep
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • elbows (double-jointed)
  • wrists
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • waist
  • hips
  • thighs
  • knees (double-jointed)
  • ankles

Accessories: I’ve already mentioned my main gripe is the lack of a neutral/smarmy head sculpt so let’s discuss his actual accessories.

Sammy comes with his leather jacket. I wish Jazwares would stick to making these cloth as plastic coats remain a pain to put on and off. And it restricts him from actually holding his other big accessory like he would during commercial breaks.

He also has his sunglasses and a sign. The weird thing is Jazwares gave him five signs with the same message.

Making them blank would have been better if having different messages was an issue.

Worth it?  I grabbed Sammy for $20, the usual price for these figures.  Compared to some of the other figures in the most recent two waves, Sammy seems like he’s lacking a little, but him being cheaper allows for more work on the Santana and Ortiz figures so it’s a fair trade off.

Rating: 9 out of 10

Sammy is a really fun figure that would have gone over the top with an alternate portrait and some variety to the signs.

Where to get it?  Target is all over this line now making it much easier to find on pegs. GameStop also is carrying the line starting with Wave 5 so I think this will be a lot easier than the first wave was in terms of tracking down.
