DC Comics reviews 6/22/21 – Infinite Frontier #1, Robin #3
Robin #3
Who knew Robin meets Mortal Kombat would be so much fun?
Taking Damian Wayne completely out of his comfort zone has proven to be a winning formula for a character so ingrained in the Bat Family dynamic.
Writer Joshua Williamson has filled the book with some intriguing supporting characters from Talon to Ravager, but the biggest surprise has been the reemergence of Connor Hawke. Williamson gives Connor and Damian a nice bonding moment, but since Connor is considered Damian’s biggest threat to win the tournament it doesn’t last long.
Gleb Melkinov’s art is such a great fit for the tone and style of the story. The characters have plenty of personality while Melkinov avoids making the art look overly cartoonish. This is a tournament to the death after all. Luis Guerrero’s color work remains solid with impeccable instincts on the appropriate lighting for each scenario.
Williamson provides a shocking cliffhanger that definitely is going to shake up the status quo on the title.
Robin has been a genuine surprise and provided a well needed change of pace for Damian Wayne.
