F9 races off to $70 million debut in pandemic record
Turns out Dom and his family were exactly what the box office needed. F9 roared to a mighty $70 million debut.
That’s a box office record since the start of the pandemic and the best opening since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker back in December 2019. The final chapter of the Star Wars sequel trilogy opened with $175 million.
A Quiet Place Part II previously had the best pandemic opening with $48.3 million, which bodes well for Disney’s Black Widow, set to open on July 7.
F9 fared better than the Fast and Furious spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw, which rolled out with $60 million en route to a domestic total of $173 million.
The previous entry in the series, 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, opened to $98 million as it reached $1.2 billion worldwide including $226 million domestically.

A Quiet Place Part II came in second with $6.2 million as it closes in on $150 million. Five weeks in, the film has earned $136 million domestically.
The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard clocked in with $4.8 million with $25.8 million total in two weeks. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway landed in fourth place at $4.8 million as it hits $28.8 million in its third week.
Completing the top five was Cruella with $3.7 million. The film has earned $71 million domestically and $183 million globally. That’s impressive considering the premium $30 rental fee for Disney Plus subscribers.
