Transformers Studio Series 86 Blurr figure review

The great thing about reviewing figures is I can pass off re-watching Transformers: The Movie as research. Not that I need the excuse. Blurr was one of my early favorites of the new generation thanks to his color scheme and life on fast forward mentality.

Blurr was among the several futuristic new generation Transformers that replaced Prowl, Ironhide, Wheeljack, etc. for the sake of selling more times. That’s a pretty extreme way to get kids to buy new Autobots, but this is why I’m writing figure reviews and not on my yacht in the Bahamas.

The Transformers Studio Series have sucked me all in to collecting Transformers again so let’s take a quick look and see how the fastest Autobot turned out.

Packaging: The Studio Series features a simple black and red color scheme with an animated style drawing on the front and side.

Blurr’s package is fittingly labeled Battle of Autobot City. For my money, the opening of Transformers The Movie to Prime’s death (spoiler) is some of the most action packed of any film. The brief write-up frames Blurr’s role in the film well: Blurr defends Autobot City until reinforcements arrive.

Likeness: This figure matches up very well with the movie art. There might be a few more panels and detail work on the figure than the cartoon, but it’s definitely not to an excessive amount and adds to the sculpt.

Of all the newer Autobots, Blurr had the most futuristic look with his angular design and elements just for the sake of conveying a distant future style. The head sculpt has a very noble, confident look.

Alt Mode: For his alt mode, Blurr had more of a racer torpedo setup. This future cars had some odd designs that I still don’t think look that amazing in 2021.

Transformation: Blurr has one of the simpler transformations with 18 steps.

Blurr wasn’t much trouble at all to convert as his vehicle mode comes together in a sensible manner without a lot of random twists and flips to make it come together.

Scale:  Blurr seemed to be right at the same height as Kup and Hot Rod, who all would look up at Springer and Ultra Magnus.

Paint:  So far I haven’t seen a Studio Series 86 figure with a bad paint job so much as paint applications that don’t 100% match up with the film.

For Blurr, that’s his shoulder cannons, which should have the darker blue along the outer tip.

I still think the one area that could be improved across the line is a much brighter, lighter blue for the eyes. The flat blue used almost looks like Blurr is shut down. There’s light piping so when it catches the light it looks great, but that’s not always a viable option.

Blurr’s light and dark blue paint combination turned out really nice and makes for a good contrast with the white elements. Maybe the white is a bit too bright and not the off white of the cartoon, but it’s not a big issue.

Articulation:  Blurr moves pretty well and isn’t too clunky to move around in various poses. His under arm section takes a bit of getting used to as they don’t tab into his forearms and will move freely when you start posing him. Once you get used to them posing Blurr is easy and he’s as fun as Kup and Hot Rod.

Accessories: Blurr doesn’t come with a ton of accessories.

He does comes with his blaster. It’s cast in white compared to the light grey of the movie.

He also has another attachment that plugs into his fist. I don’t remember what that’s from, but it’s another display option for him.

Like all the other figures in this series, he comes with a backdrop based on a moment from The Movie. In his case, it’s the attack on Autobot City.

Worth it?  I grabbed Blurr for $20, a perfectly reasonable price for this guy.

Rating: 8.5 out of 10

The arms are a little funky, but otherwise Blurr is another terrific addition to the Studio Series 86.
