Star Wars The Bad Batch – Common Ground review S1 E10

Common Ground felt much more like the Bad Batch featured in the final season of The Clone Wars. It was probably just a coincidence that this episode had Omega benched while the squad handled a mission.

Raxus, the former center of the Separatist government, is prepping for Imperial control with its Senator, Avi Singh, set for his new role as figurehead. His protocol droid, GS-8 (Sian Clifford), gets a message off to Cid who sends the Batch to retrieve Singh.

This is more of the A-Team style missions I wanted from the series. And it was even better since Omega had to stay with Cid. None of the Batch is down for coming to the rescue of a Separatist senator. That’s a perfectly valid reaction considering Separatist senators kept them fighting a war for years and in Echo’s case left him deformed.

It was nice to see the Clone’s tank walkers in action against people in the Republic instead of just battling droids. This felt like the middle of the transition from the Clone Army uniforms and vehicles to the more familiar Empire trappings.

GS-8 proves to be a fun sidekick for the reluctant Bad Batch and now I want the show to add a protocol droid to the mix. This Bad Batch was the wreck a fleet of battle droids and leave chaos in their wake that we saw in their debut. They weren’t stifled or outsmarted by the Imperials and needed to punch the Omega rescue card.

This episode reminded us the Batch was pretty formidable long before they adopted a sidekick. And it was just nice watching the Batch unleash mass destruction on their former brethren and Imperial officers. I’m still not a fan of the progressive Empire with women in leadership roles. Just stuffy white British guys for my Empire, please. Thanks.

Omega starts advising Cid on the game she’s playing at her establishment. Naturally, Omega is a whiz at this too because she’s the end of all things suspenseful and interesting.

When the Batch arrives back at Sid’s they find Omega has made a killing at the game and made enough to settle their debt with Cid. So there’s just never going to be any suspense or drama with anything involving Omega, huh?

I wish the writers could reach a point where they realized a character that’s instantly great at everything isn’t a very interesting character. Omega could be a good character if it weren’t for the fact that the writers have prioritized making a child the most amazing one of the Batch.

Look at how differently Ezra was written in Star Wars Rebels compared to Omega. Ezra had to learn to become a Jedi. Ultimately, he became a good strategist, but he didn’t immediately show up Kannan and outduel him with a lightsaber or use the Mandalorian jetpack better than Sabine.

That would’ve made Ezra annoying and it’s a road Bad Batch is heading down with their treatment of Omega. Hunter takes a sucker bet and plays Omega in the game. If she wins, she won’t have to sit out any more missions.

If wrestling has taught me anything if the other person doesn’t ask for their own stipulation they’re booked to win. The writers don’t even bother with it since we all know how that’s ending as they cue the credits.

Omega’s latest conquest aside, Common Ground felt like what Bad Batch should have been all along.
