Batman The Detective #4

When a story is this solid, questions like where it fits in the continuity, is this a story on another Earth and is this just an Elseworlds story don’t matter.

Tom Taylor and Andy Kubert continue Batman’s battle to stop Equilibrium before more of the people he saved end up dead. It’s too bad this story isn’t set in the relative present as Equilibrium is a villain with obvious staying power that could easily work on a smaller scale in Gotham.

Still, part of the fun of this story is that Batman doesn’t have his usual assortment of tricks and tools at his disposal in Europe. No matter the setting, Taylor clearly has a deep comprehension of Bruce Wayne and how he operates as his alter ego and Batman. This makes a major difference so Batman doesn’t read…foreign to longtime readers.

Kubert’s art remains impressive. The layouts and expressive characters are invaluable in telling this story. Kubert also is able to balance between the big action set piece moments and the quieter sequences.

DC has too many Batman books in the lineup these days, but Batman The Detective is certainly a strong enough read to warrant enduring through any pruning.
