DC Comics reviews 7/20-21 – Nightwing #82, The Flash #772

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #2

supergirl woman of tomorrow #2

Most of this issue focuses on an extended road trip — think Supergirl forced to get to a destination by Greyhound.

Ruthye continues narrating her travels with Kara as they seek to get revenge on Krem of Yellow Hills. For Ruthye, it’s to avenge her father’s murder while for Supergirl it’s equally personal.

Writer Tom King’s take on Supergirl is very…different. She’s far less patient, somewhat belligerent and has an unnecessarily foul mouth. In moments this bad attitude Supergirl is interesting, but it feels too big a departure from how she’s normally written.

And Supergirl doping up on Red Kryptonite also feels too much like being edgy for the sake of shaking up preconceived notions of Kara.

Bilquis Evely’s art fits the tone of this story beautifully. Her pages range from tight intimidate panels to wide sweeping moments enhanced by Evely’s restraint in not overdoing them.

King’s unique take on Supergirl aide, Woman of Tomorrow is proving to be a worthwhile journey and different mission for The Girl of Steel.
