DC Comics reviews 7/20-21 – Nightwing #82, The Flash #772

Superman and The Authority #1

Whenever DC wants to get a little wacky while keeping things entertaining, editorial turns to Grant Morrison, who never fails to deliver.

Superman and The Authority hardly fleshes out the team, instead Morrison devotes most of the initial issue with Superman attempting to recruit Manchester Black on a mission to succeed where the Justice League failed.

Morrison instinctively gets how to write Manchester Black and play up the distinct differences in philosophy. The Superman/Manchester Black dynamic feels like the foundation of the title so it makes sense for Morrison to spotlight it early on.

Morrison casually works in that this title does not occur in the standard DC Universe as Superman was a confidant of President Kennedy, who suggested the heroes of that era form a new team as inspired by the Justice Society.

At some point this team failed and an older Superman is assembling a team to redeem the Justice League.

Mikel Janin doesn’t have a lot of exciting panels and pages to craft, but his work is exquisite. Janin captures the personalities of Superman and Manchester Black and have a good sense who’s winning and losing the debate.

With the drastic changes to Superman in other titles, it’s nice to see Morrison can quickly capture the core of the character even when throwing a wild card like Manchester Black in the mix.
