Marvel Legends Captain America review – BAF Captain America Flight gear wave

From the end of Avengers: Endgame, I’ve been anticipating Sam Wilson as Captain America. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier took a longer approach to get there, which worked very well in explaining the need for Sam to take on the role from his friend Steve Rogers.

I’m looking forward to seeing this new era Avengers come together. But first, we’ve got to get a Marvel Legends Captain America from the series. Let’s see if Hasbro’s version soars.

Packaging: Hasbro smartly put the focus on the specific shows for this Disney+ wave so this one prominently features The Falcon and the Winter Soldier logo along with the small Disney+ label.

The package art has a great look at Captain America in a very heroic stance worthy of one of the fixtures of Marvel’s Phase 4 lineup.

This is another bio that proves when Hasbro wants to they can craft some informative and useful bios despite a limited word count.

Likeness:  Of this wave, Captain America clearly has the most detail heavy outfit and the Hasbro sculptors really did an exceptional job. It’s obvious Hasbro was able to get clear reference pictures of the costume. It matches up pretty precisely with the show.

Most of it is obscured with the headgear, but it’s easy to see the Anthony Mackie likeness from the nose, mouth and hairline. That’s good work at this scale, which could be harder to get those exact likeness points down especially with half the head covered.

All of the paneling and fabric details from this Wakanda created attire is in place showing off the MCU take on this mostly comic accurate outfit. I really wish he had fists though as the flying hands are goofy in most standard poses.

MORE:

Paint: I’m not sure in this case who deserves the hit for this, but Cap’s goggles should be more transparent.

If you look super close you can see Sam’s eyes, but the coating on the goggles is too thick. It was cool of Hasbro to actually properly sculpt the eyes underneath the non-removable goggles however.

Unlike the U.S. Agent in this wave, Hasbro made sure to get all of the correct paint applications for Captain America. The paintwork degree of difficulty here is high with the smaller lines and the notoriously easy bleed pairing of red and white stripes.

I’m also not sure about the silver wings on either side of the star. In some angles, they look silver and in other instances they appear white. I’ll give Hasbro the benefit of the doubt here.

It’s not a perfect paintjob, there’s some white from the headgear spilling over to the head, some points could use another hit of white and the silver lining on the boots is inconsistent.

Scale: Cap is one of the shorter main heroes so he should be shorter than The Winter Soldier, Baron Zemo and U.S. Agent.

Articulation: Captain America has the standard Marvel Legends articulation. Naturally that makes him very fun to pose and he can hit a number of deep stances.

The only trick with his articulation, which I’ll show later when I complete the wings is his shoulders are more restricted on the side movement than I expected. That will definitely hinder some flight poses.

Captain America has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • bicep swivel
  • elbow (double-jointed)
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • hip
  • thigh
  • knee (double-jointed)
  • ankle

I did have fun posing him, but (maybe) last time just one hand could have had a fist?

Accessories:  Captain America could come with some accessory options, including a head sculpt with the headgear down. Instead, he just comes with his shield. And I suppose you could include the backpack, but I’m not sure how I feel about that since it’s part of his costume and it’s not like he takes it off.

Hasbro keeps going with more silver instead of white for the shield paint apps. This would have been an ideal time to mix it up and go with a different paint app for the shield.

Cap also comes with his backpack for when the wings are folded in. Interestingly that’s not considered part of the Build-A-Figure flight gear although I would have figured all the wings would just be part of the regular Captain America presentation.

Maybe this was a case where he was the deluxe addition to this wave so we could have gotten an actual Build-A-Figure instead of Cap’s wings.

Worth it?  Some members of this wave recently went on sale for $15. That helped offset some of the costs to build Cap’s wings and definitely would have been a better price point. Cap was the regular $20, but I can appreciate all of the extra work in his sculpt so I don’t feel like he was basic repaint with a few new parts and head.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10

Clearer goggles and fists would have helped a lot — not as much as making the wings part of the actual figure, but that’s a whole other issue. Still, as Part 1 of Captain America, this is a pretty good figure.

Where to get it?  Captain America is available now for $19, but retailers are starting to raise the prices of Marvel Legends to the new $23 price point even if they originally were released for $20.

This line has been pretty hard to find at retail and with another wave already out you might want to just start getting them online. You can grab him now from Amazon or Entertainment Earth.

Marvel Select has also released a Captain America figure that you can get on Amazon.
