DC Comics reviews 8/31/21 – Batman Fear State Alpha #1, Infinite Frontier #5
Teen Titans Academy #6
With every issue it’s feeling more apparent that DC needs to expand its Titans universe again. Trying to fit in three iterations of Teen Titans into one book isn’t feasible when one could feature the newer characters from the Academy.
That’s a longer term discussion. For now, writer Tim Sheridan further develops the cast thanks to a little getaway. A group of the teen academy members head out to a secluded pond that’s a little too secluded and uncover a mystery they weren’t expecting.
Sheridan seems to have a lot of fun developing the newer characters and they play off each other nicely. Characters like Stitch, Gorilla Greg, Summer and Tress stand out with clearly defined personalities. And the payoff to the mystery is a good one.
Rafa Sandoval’s art is captivating as he’s such a strong storyteller with terrific instincts on perspectives and framing. Sandoval makes the lighter moments just as eye catching as the action sequences. Ulises Arreola’s color work is clean and crisp with just the right tones and blends throughout.
The only downside to this issue is the lack of the adult Titans team. They’re starting to feel underrepresented in the book in the teacher role. It’d be nice to at least get a Titans book with all the classic legacy characters back in action together again.
As of now they’re just making guest appearances.
Teen Titans Academy continues to be an enjoyable, personality-driven ride. With this issue’s cliffhanger, Sheridan has some fun possibilities to play with for next issue.
