Shang-Chi rings up second highest grossing weekend of 2021
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings kicked off Labor Day weekend with a decent $71.4 million.
That was good enough for the second best domestic opening of 2021 trailing only Black Widow. Scarlett Johansson’s Marvel Cinematic Universe farewell racked up $80.3 million. It does beat out F9, which earned $70 million.

This is interesting as early estimates had it reaching as high as $90 million.
Unlike Black Widow, Shang-Chi was solely released in theaters. Black Widow earned $80 million in theaters and an additional $60 million from Disney Plus premiere access. The Delta variant of the Coronavirus looks like it is still prevalent in audiences’ minds as this isn’t the same performance as we’ve come to expect from standalone Marvel films.
Maybe Disney/Marvel Studios could have done its day and date theatrical release model again? It seems like with the variant, staying with the Disney Plus model might work at least for this year. Worldwide, Shang-Chi brought in $56.2 million overseas opening for a global total of $139.7 million.
Candyman followed up its debut with $13.4 million for the Labor Day holiday. The Nia DaCosta-directed film is now up to $40.4 million. Free Guy earned another $8.7 million to take its tally to $91.8 million. Jungle Cruise keeps on cruising with another $3.9 million taking its box office haul to $106.9 million. Paw Patrol: The Movie digs up $3.8 for a total of $31.5 million.
