DC Comics reviews 9/14/21 – Rorschach #12, I Am Batman #1
Batman The Adventures Continue Season Two #4
Alan Burnett and Paul Dini have the Batman Animated Series format down and it’s easy to read every issue like a continuation of the cartoon.
In this episode/issue, Det. Renee Montoya is targeted for assassination by The Muscle — a killer with a lame name, but a formidable skill set. Batman comes to Montoya’s defense despite being very low on her most popular Gotham resident list putting him on a collision course with the new threat in the city.
Burnett and Dini hardly make Montoya a damsel in distress and she’s just as active in taking down Muscle as Batman, which was vital to this story. Artist Jordan Gibson easily captures the visual style of the cartoon series with blocky bruising characters and more angular women. Gibson translates the action smoothly, which can be hard for a comic based off of a cartoon. Colorist Monica Kubina plays up the series’ red and black colors strongly with gradients that pop off the panels.
This is comic book comfort food. You know what you’re getting and it always delivers. There’s no surprises, but the thrills and frills are always worth it.
