Superman 78 #2

It’s very easy to envision Superman 78 as Richard Donner’s third Superman movie.

Writer Robert Venditti really has the tone down. Venditti has written some terrific stories for DC with very complex, layered plots. A Superman story set in 1978 doesn’t need to have five different subplots — keeping it simple is the as to go.

With Brainiac, Venditti has a villain with a clear objective capable of posing a legit threat to Superman and create a point of intrigue for Lex Luthor.

Venditti captures the voice of the characters effortlessly from Lois and Clark’s banter to Luthor’s massive ego.

Wilfredo Torres’ art is similarly locked in to the Donner style and his Clark Kent’s posture is a dead ringer for Christopher Reeves’ stance. Torres’ take on Gene Hackman’s Luthor is also impressive. There’s still some work to do to fully get Margot Kidder’s likeness, but the artwork is very solid.

Jordie Bellaire always does exceptional color work and she conveys the less ominous style of this story with a brighter color palette.

This has been a very fun series so far and the creative team is fully engaged with crafting the sequel to one of the original iconic superhero movie franchises.
