DC Comics 9/28/21 – Justice League #68, Robin #6

It’s all been building to this moment — Superman departs Earth to try and stop Mongul.

Writer Philip Kennedy Johnson really does a commendable job with this hand he’s been dealt. Johnson provides a reasonable enough motive for Superman to leave Earth as he crossed some government lines to stop Mongul’s plans on Earth. When saying farewell to the Justice League, Johnson understands the importance of Superman’s last conversation.

Wacky continuity strikes yet again. In Grant Morrison’s Superman and The Authority, he recruited his team while sporting grey temples as I’d to suggest that story was taking place at some point in the future. This issue has The Authority all set to roll with Superman to Warworld.

Daniel Sampere’s art has been so clean through this run. There’s no loose panels with rough sketch work and there’s an overall tightness to every page.

Sampere has delivered fantastic work since the start of this arc. Sadly it seems as if he’s just going to be providing cover artwork going forward.

Johnson couldn’t have crafted a better way to take Superman off Earth with some tender moments with most of his supporting cast and allies.

Even if this next direction doesn’t have many readers excited, Johnson’s involvement is reason enough for at least some encouragement.
