Stargirl Summer School: Chapter Seven review S2 E7

Chapter Seven of Summer School wasn’t the most exciting, but a necessary step in Eclipso tearing down the JSA from the inside out.

The Injustice Society took a more straight up approach. Eclipso prefers to attack them psychologically making for a different kind of villain. This is a nice contrast from other CW shows that find a villain formula that works and run it into the ground.

Eclipso’s first target is Yolanda and he sets his sights on her in his child appearance. So far the season hasn’t reached the point where the JSA members need to start being suspicious about every encounter even if the kid looks as creepy as Eclipso.

Yolanda starts thinking she’s seeing Brainwave and then Henry Jr. While Yolanda is seeing her ex, Courtney starts hanging out with Cameron. This is played somewhat ambiguous as it’s not clear if Yolanda is jealous of Courtney pulling away slightly as she might have a new boyfriend.

Courtney is too good a friend to kick her friend to the curb just because Cameron is showing her a little attention. When Yolanda has a meltdown in school, Courtney checks on her and reminds her she doesn’t have to face her trauma alone. Courtney makes the important distinction that Yolanda didn’t commit murder and was simply acting in self defense.

Yolanda tells Rick and Beth that she killed Brainwave. Rick doesn’t blame her, but Beth isn’t so sure. Yolanda gets it, but questions how they’re going to stop Eclipso if she doesn’t kill him?

This is the kind of conversations that never play out in these shows! Not everyone has to agree and this offers a far more realistic take on something like murder/self defense. It’s not an either or conversation and this allows for the team to have differing opinions without hating each other.

MORE:

The one tricky part of this episode was when Yolanda started having full conversations with Brainwave. Was this like “Brainwave” said and just a part of his mind he projected into her? Solid villain plan if that’s the case. Or is it just another mind screw from Eclipso?

Whatever is true, Courtney arrives in time to help Yolanda before she has another full on breakdown. This conversation doesn’t end as well though as Yolanda questions why Courtney ever recruited her and quits the JSA and being Wildcat.

Naturally Courtney tries to help, but Yolanda shuts her out even going as far as having her domineering mother. And she also quits working at the diner, which suggests Eclipso might be working his influence throughout the Montez family.

This wasn’t a super flashy installment, but it showed how low Eclipso will go to tear down the JSA while offering some welcome team discord rarely covered in superhero shows.
