Nubia and the Amazons #1

nubia and the amazons 1

The first chapter of this six-issue mini-series didn’t do a whole lot to sell the idea of Nubia doing more than boring administrative leadership work. Stephanie Williams and Vita Ayala conceived the plot with Williams handling the script.

Nubia reflects on her past of arriving on Themyscira via The Well of Souls just as a new group of women killed violently in “Man’s World,” which is an odd phrase in a Wonder Woman book in 2021, arrives on the island. Most of the issue revolves around these new Amazons and Nubia contemplating designating a new champion. That’s not overly exciting and doesn’t provide enough insight on Nubia, who still feels like a character merely keeping the throne warm for Hippolyta.

Nubia is a solid character though she seems like she’d be a lot more engaging away from the other Amazons like Diana and Wonder Girl Yara Flor.

Althia Martinez’s artwork is very strong at times while other pages lack consistency in terms of posing and a sense of movement for characters. Martinez conveys emotions for her characters very well, which is arguably the more challenging piece for good artists to become great. It was nice to see a welcome diverse array of Amazons as well.

As a spotlight on Nubia, this was underwhelming and Amazon politics and rearing of the new generation don’t make for the most exciting entry point for a new mini-series
