DC Comics reviews 10/26/21 – DC vs Vampires #1, Checkmate #5

Task Force Z #1

Creating a new zombie-focused title in the wake of the massive success that was DCeased doesn’t seem like a winning strategy. Somehow writer Matthew Rosenberg is able to make Task Force Z feel fun and fresh, unlike its featured characters.

Red Hood is leading an assortment of Batman Rogues, most of them zombies, in federally appointed missions. Jason Todd is an unlikely leader and Rosenberg plays up his questionable fit as the same one. Rosenberg brings a relatable sense of government procedures with the separation of the field team and the administration running the program.

Eddy Barrows has mastered big blockbuster style action for years now. Adding zombies to the mix allows him to tap into a more horror-focused side he cultivated on Freedom Fighters.

The intricate detailing of the zombies and even the battle wounds in Red Hood help ensure this is going to be a visually strong title as well. Adriano Lucas’ colors help convey the darker aspects of the story particularly with the work on blood sprays and puddles.

Despite the unusual premise, Task Force Z shows a lot of promise. Thanks to the mystery of the forces running the show and Jason’s latest role, this could be a title that quickly earns a must-read status.
